Commercial Appeal – Loss of Davis a blow to Desoto County, Reeves a silver lining

OXFORD — Chris Massey’s stunning upset of state Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Doug Davis in Tuesday’s Republican primary cost DeSoto County a powerful voice in the state Legislature, but Tate Reeves’ victory in the lieutenant governor’s race is the county’s silver lining.

DeSoto County’s other state senator, Merle Flowers of Olive Branch, was an early and strong supporter of Reeves, and that should translate into big gains for the county when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 3.

Reeves defeated state Sen. Billy Hewes of Gulfport by a 57-43 percent margin with all but 19 of the state’s 1,873 precincts reporting.
