Conference realignment left a lot of Big 12 schools with angry fanbases

I read where four 16 team Super Conferences could lead to the end of the NCAA. Can you explain the relationship between the NCAA and the college institutions?

Chuck Carlton: The NCAA is a voluntary organization. But it does regulate and oversee college athletics for its members. it negotiates national TV deals, notably the NCAA Tournament, sets playing rules and has an enforcement division, as USC discovered. It’s not nearly as an involved with college football because of the BCS. With four 16-team power conferences, the framework would be there to ditch the NCAA and all the profit-sharing with smaller schools and claim all the pie for themselves.
