Palazzo Amendment Protects President’s Border Wall
Washington, DC – Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) today released the following statement praising House passage of the FY17 National Defense Authorization Act, NDAA, which included his amendment to allow NDAA funding to be used toward the President’s border wall.
“My amendment corrects a weak attempt by liberal democrats to hijack our annual defense bill with an unrelated and politically motivated amendment. This bill doesn’t contain any specific funding for wall construction, but I also believe if the president needs to realign funds or utilize our military to support the border security mission in the future, he should have the flexibility to do so. The President promised to secure our border, and we are going to help him do that.
“The President also promised to rebuild our military and protect the American people both at home and abroad and with passage of this NDAA we are helping him keep that promise. Providing for the common defense of this nation remains our number one constitutional responsibility in Congress and I’m proud to say we are once again fulfilling that responsibility. Our men and women in uniform are the best in the world at what they do, and we owe it to them to ensure they always have the tools and resources they need to get the job done.”
The NDAA fully supports our military at a funding level of $631.5 billion, allowing us to keep our commitment to our men and women in uniform. This bill provides a 2.4% military pay raise for our service members. It also calls for an increase in the number of Navy ships produced as President Trump has continuously requested as part of his initiative to build up our military, including an additional destroyer and funding for the LPD-30 both of which are manufactured in Jackson County at Ingalls in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The bill also provides $100 million for National Guard helicopters.
