Dale has faced a firestorm criticism from detractors angry about the insurance situation following the devastating 2005 storm. Many homeowners were not paid by their insurance companies, and rates have shot skyward since the hurricane.

Dale, who is serving his eighth term after being elected insurance commissioner in 1975, is candid about his chances in this election, half-joking with Columbus Rotarians he could be back to his old job – teaching history – after Tuesday’s primaries.

Dale had to get a judge to order Democrats to put him on the ballot for the party primary after the Democratic Executive Committee refused to do so.
