PORTLAND, ORE. — There were all the familiar signs of a season-ending loss here Thursday afternoon. The red eyes, the slumped shoulders, the hushed tones, the slow walk on gray concrete from locker room to press conference.

But in the aftermath of Washington’s 71-58 NCAA Tournament first-round win at the Rose Garden that ended Mississippi State’s season, a glimmer of hope: This wasn’t like last year’s ending, when State eventually lost its two biggest stars.
