Voter feels primary system disenfranchises

A voter who voted Democrat in the Aug. 4 primary and wished to cast a vote in the Republican primary runoff election on Aug. 25 for DeSoto County Superintendent of Education said she was disenfranchised at the ballot box…

…”My inclination is likened to what party officials feel in that they do not want open primaries,” Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said in response. “It’s a party primary. It’s not a general election. That’s the law that the Legislature has passed. Our response typically is that the state law requires that,” Hosemann said to disallowing voters to vote for one party in a primary and then switch to voting in the opposing party’s runoff, if held.
