Gov. Haley Barbour and public education advocacy groups have had their serious disagreements, primarily over funding, and the legislative maneuvering and backbiting – especially between a Barbour-Senate alliance and the House leadership – has caused considerable acrimony. Only this year did all get on the same page in funding Mississippi’s Adequate Education Program.

But interestingly, Barbour and state Superintendent of Education Hank Bounds have enjoyed a publicly cordial relationship, and the governor is often effusive in his praise for Bounds. As Daily Journal Capitol Bureau Chief Bobby Harrison points out in a story on today’s front page, Barbour has made a point to be supportive of the superintendent – even though they’ve disagreed on some issues.
