Simpson blamed his tax difficulty on the economic toll that Hurricane Katrina had taken on his family and the supposed financial sacrifice of public service.
“I regret I didn’t pay (the taxes) on time, but it makes me a lot like other people. When you’re a state employee, that’s not in the budget,” he said.
The voters might accept the Katrina excuse. There were many families along the Gulf Coast whose financial fortunes took a tumble after the devastating natural disaster in 2005.
