Federal court to hear appeal from Miss. doctor

A Mississippi doctor convicted of orchestrating a $6.9 million Medicaid and Medicare fraud scheme will have her appeal heard in July by federal judges in New Orleans.

Oral arguments in Dr. Cassandra Faye Thomas’ appeal will be heard July 10 by a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Thomas was convicted on 10 counts by a federal jury in Jackson in 2011. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison. She filed an appeal with the 5th Circuit. She remains free on bond while her appeal is pending.

Thomas was convicted of conspiracy, health care fraud, making false statements, theft of public money and wire fraud. She was ordered to pay restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
