Coast leaders comment on Confederate flag debate

Democratic Sen. Deborah Dawkins of Pass Christian was “amazed” by Gunn’s statement.

“It’s very much the right thing to do and I just hope we have the leadership to follow South Carolina,” she said. “I like to be cautiously optimistic but it sure does take these boys down here a long time to learn what the right thing to do is.”

Sen. Brice Wiggins, R-Pascagoula, said he’s hearing support for Gunn’s proposal. “I’ve had many constituents from my district contact me and say they support a new flag,” he said. “The fact of the matter is, the way it stands, it has been detrimental to what we’ve been trying to do in the state, which is to let the rest of the world know everything good that we have — everything from our blues culture, our great sports culture, to the world class ships that we build, to the great authors that we have.

“A number of my constituents have weighed in and said they like the Magnolia flag. That’s a very good idea.” The state’s first official flag, the Magnolia flag features a magnolia tree on a white background with a blue square and a single white star in the upper-left corner.
