Senator Merle Flowers (R-Olive Branch) announced Tuesday that five DeSoto County organizations will receive $46,025 in grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission. Flowers worked to secure funding for the Arts Commission from his position as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Sub-Committee responsible for the Arts Commission’s annual state budget.
“Our entire DeSoto delegation works very hard as a team to bring home funding for DeSoto County . We know the grants will enhance educational opportunities in the arts for our folks in DeSoto County ,” said Flowers. “We are blessed to have so many positive organizations that help contribute to our quality of life and cultural experiences. These funds will go a long way in continuing our array of performing, visual, and literary arts here in DeSoto County ,” said Flowers.
Malcolm White, Executive Director of the Mississippi Arts Commission said, “On behalf of the grant recipients and those who will benefit from their work, thank you Senator Flowers.” The Arts Commission will award $1.5 million across Mississippi ’s 82 counties.
The grants awarded to DeSoto County are:
DeSoto Arts Council: $17,400 for general operating support
DeSoto Family Theatre: $19,750 for general operating support
First Regional Library: $750 for special performance
Greenbrook Elementary School: $1000 for Puppet Arts Theatre
Olive Branch Arts Council: $7,125 for general operating support
Flowers serves as Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Senate Housing Committee, and Senate Appropriations Sub-Committee Chairman for Economic Development and Tourism.
