Mike Chaney, a Republican contender for insurance commissioner, made an unusual request for a politician Thursday.

Pick him, he said before the crowd at the Neshoba County Fair, and he’ll make sure it’s the last time Mississippians vote for an insurance commissioner. He would rather the position be by appointment.

And Gary Anderson, the Democratic challenger to incumbent George Dale in next month’s Democratic primary, repeated his accusation that Dale is too cozy with the industry he regulates.
