For Coaches, Recruiting Top Players Can Lead to a Dark Side

For all the last-second shots and overtime games of March Madness, a cloud will hang over the men’s Final Four in Detroit next weekend. Connecticut, one of the nation’s elite programs under Jim Calhoun, is the subject of an investigation in the wake of compelling evidence that UConn may have committed recruiting violations.

The N.C.A.A. is investigating, but the uproar has been an embarrassment for Calhoun, a Hall of Fame coach and the state’s highest-paid employee.
