Former Congressman Gene Taylor will serve on Hancock County ports commission

Former U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor was sworn in Wednesday as a member of the Hancock County Port & Harbor Commission, returning once again to represent the area after losing his congressional reelection bid in 2010.

Taylor, the former Bay St. Louis councilman and Democratic lawmaker who served in Congress from 1989 until January 2011, was appointed to the Commission by Hancock County District 3 Supervisor Lisa Cowand. Taylor lost to Republican Steven Palazzo in 2010, but said Wednesday he was happy to be serving Hancock County once again.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Taylor said. “The people of Hancock County have been wonderful to me and my family for a heck of a long time. They looked out for my family in those years I had to be in Washington for half the time. They’ve stuck with me in every election I’ve had, so anything I can do for Hancock County, I want to do so.”
