From hoops to football, gifted Gates was a natural (5-star piece)

Antonio Gates made the first of his 503 catches in the Chargers’ last loss to the Oakland Raiders, and he remembers thinking Marty Schottenheimer was “crazy” for allowing him to suit up.
He remembers lining up against the redoubtable Rod Woodson and wondering about his worthiness.
“That’s the last thing I really remember, that I was going against Rod Woodson,” Gates said Friday afternoon. “He was playing safety for the Raiders and I remembered him as a shutdown corner. I remember making plays on him and I thought, ‘This ain’t that hard.’?”
