Taylor: $2M study on Hancock County rail line a waste of money

Former U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor, a new member of the Hancock County Development Commission, believes the board needs to put the kibosh on studying a new rail line from Port Bienville to the Nicholson area.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Development Commission are hosting a meeting Tuesday night so residents can learn more about the study and offer input.

The feasibility study is exploring explore the economic opportunities and other aspects of connecting the port’s Short Line Railroad with the north-south Norfolk Southern rail line. The study started in June and should be finished around March, at a cost of $700,000, said Sammy Holcomb, MDOT planning analysis manager.
