Georgia Tech defense excited about changes

Macon — Darryl Richard was smiling Tuesday, hard and wide.
The senior defensive tackle from Georgia Tech looked — and sounded — like a young man with a new lease on life.

Dave Wommack is changing Richard’s outlook. The Yellow Jackets’ defense, which spent the previous six season on non-stop spin cycle under coordinator Jon Tenuta, will mix it up more.
“It’s a lot more multiple than what we did with Coach Tenuta,” Richard said Tuesday at the Peachstate Pigskin Preview at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
Under Wommack, Tech’s ends will play wider, backs will blitz less frequently, and even the big guys in the middle, like Richard and All-ACC tackle Vance Walker, will have more room to roam.
“No question. In Coach Tenuta’s system, I pretty much played the nose guard, and I had a responsibility every play of crossing the center’s face,” Richard said. “I didn’t get many chances to do what I thought I do best, which a lot of times is work from the guard position, get in their heads with different styles.”
