‘King of Torts’ seeks to void conviction

A former staff lawyer for both Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran and former Sen. Trent Lott may testify at a hearing next week in which “King of Torts” lawyer Richard F. “Dickie” Scruggs is seeking to void his 2009 federal honest-services fraud conviction.

Hugh Gamble, currently the legislative affairs director for Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and another Senate staffer, were authorized to testify at the Oxford, Miss., hearing next Monday by a Senate resolution waiving its privileges in the matter.

The resolution was introduced and passed on Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor that both Lott and Cochran want to assist the court in providing relevant evidence. Gamble did not immediately respond to a message left on his voicemail.
