Bryant: MDE errors require immediate action

Gov. Phil Bryant has called on the State Board of Education to address what he has deemed a “pattern of poor decision-making and mismanagement” by the state’s department of education, following an error by former MDE employees that’s placed the federal funding for some after-school programs in jeopardy.

The department said Thursday it is facing a deficit of up to $19 million due to an over commitment of federal funds for 21st Century Community Learning Centers for the previous school year. State Superintendent of Education Carey Wright said the individuals responsible for the misspending were terminated, but Bryant said in a statement that immediate action is needed by the State Board of Education to “remedy” the “pattern of poor decision making and mismanagement” at MDE.
