Details have leaked from sealed federal court documents asking for a shorter sentence because disbarred Booneville attorney Joey Langston has helped with the government’s investigation of Richard “Dickie” Scruggs and suspended Hinds judge Bobby DeLaughter.
The “downward departure motion” apparently was accidentally made public Wednesday, then pulled from public view.
The document described in detail how Langston had been helping the government since his January guilty plea that he helped Scruggs bribe DeLaughter.
No one else has been legally ensnared in this case, but it’s widely believed former Scruggs associates Timothy Balducci and Steven Patterson of New Albany have been active in working with federal investigators.
Through his attorney, Scruggs said months ago he didn’t bribe DeLaughter. And DeLaughter said publicly he wasn’t bribed.
