Lawmakers from the Gulf Coast and other areas said their offices were swamped with calls and emails Tuesday from constituents weighing in on the congressional debate over lifting the nation’s debt limit.
Lawmakers say callers were responding to President Barack Obama’s speech Monday in which he asked Americans “to make your voice heard.”
“If you want a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, let your member of Congress know,” he said. “If you believe we can solve this problem through compromise, send that message.”
The public responded in force.
