Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour talked up the idea of a national flat tax in an appearance at the National Press Club on Tuesday morning, though he said he wasn’t familiar enough with Rick Perry’s specific proposal to comment on it directly.
POLITICO’s Matt DoBias sends over this answer from Barbour — one of the most prominent establishment Republicans who’s neutral in the GOP primary — when he was asked about Perry’s ideas:
“I can’t tell you about the details, but is a flat tax good policy? Yes. It’s not the only good policy, but it certainly can be very good tax policy. Particularly if you eliminate a lot of deductions so that it increases … revenue.
“Spending less—that’s all we’ve been talking about—so I hope that I’ve gotten across to you that spending less money is a good policy.
