Harper says Obama out-of-touch
HARPER: PRESIDENT OBAMA SHOULD CONSIDER GOP SOLUTIONS
Congress should be focused on growing the economy, not growing the federal government.
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R–Miss.) made the following statement following President Barack Obama’s first State of the Union address.
“The President is clearly out of touch with American citizens. After the President’s driving the federal deficit to a record $1.47 trillion, millions of people are still without jobs. Americans have real anxiety on the government takeover of health care and the idea of a national energy tax, particularly considering this Administration’s power grab to control the nation’s housing and financial markets and the auto industry. Congress should be focused on growing the economy, not growing the federal government.
“House Republicans have reached out to Democratic Members of Congress with sound solutions to boost our economy. Unfortunately, the President and his Democratic allies in Congress have endlessly refused to engage Republican input on the principle issues facing our country.
“I welcome the President’s call for fiscal discipline, but am not convinced by his change of heart – particularly considering his Administration’s record of spending, debt and deficits. I support a jobs plan that will eliminate job-killing federal tax increases until the unemployment rate drops below five percent, freeze domestic discretionary spending at last year’s level, remove unnecessary barriers to domestic energy production and offer assistance to small businesses and community banks struggling with the downturn in the commercial real estate market. These practical steps will advance economic growth and create jobs without expanding the scope of the federal government.”
