Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is working with his counterparts in surrounding states to create a Southern “Super Primary.” This would entice presidential candidates to pay attention to, and campaign in, states such as Mississippi…
…“I want the next president of the United States to come to the South and to Mississippi to tell us their views,” Hosemann said.
Hosemann said he has been talking for more than a year with fellow secretaries of state in the South about moving elections to a single, earlier day. He has drafted legislation he’ll propose in January to move Mississippi’s presidential primary date from the second Tuesday in March to the first Tuesday of the month. For 2016, that will be March 1.
Tennessee has already signed on, and Georgia’s secretary is pushing hard for it. Louisiana had already planned to move its primary up to March 5, “Super Tuesday.”
