Lawmaker: State budget ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul’

House Appropriations Chairman John Read said the bills were recommitted to correct or change some language but the budget amounts that were agreed upon for agencies weren’t expected to change.

“We are robbing Peter to pay Paul,” Read, R-Gautier, said Sunday about this year’s budget process. “We are making some hard budget cuts, but we try to be fair.”

Read, who served eight years as vice chairman of Appropriations before moving to chairman this year, said this is one of the worse budget years in the last decade due to the state’s declining revenue.
