Jackson County flood victims struggle to return to normal

When Hurricane Katrina plowed into the Mississippi Gulf Coast seven years ago, Helena resident Gina German had a “tiny mud puddle” in front of her trailer, which sits on a hill. And yet, when Hurricane Isaac dumped more than two feet of water on south Mississippi last week, the rains caved in her roof and floodwaters floated a car up to her doorstep.

That’s why German and her daughter, Jamie Chapman, were picking through pallets of canned goods and cleaning supplies in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Helena on Wednesday afternoon.
