Jackson Mayor Frank Melton on Monday followed up on his State of the City speech with announcements of new initiatives that he said would help homeless and destitute residents, help children find church homes and transition convicted felons into productive citizens.

Melton said he would speak with City Council members to find money to start the programs. The mayor said he favored cutting about $1 million from JATRAN and making other major cuts to get funding. Possible cuts include trimming the city’s workforce from 2,149 downward.
