Jackson race one of hottest

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

South Jackson resident Tita King has been keeping tabs on the Jackson mayoral race. At least 35,000 people are expected to turn out.

“I just hear a lot of talk about it,” she said. “From what I can see, everybody’s saying Frank Melton’s in the lead, but they just want to see a change. They don’t care who it is, as long as they do a good job.”

Melton faces two-term Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. A third Democratic candidate, Annell Smith, has kept herself largely out of the limelight. Jackson voters also will decide on Democratic candidates for six of the city’s seven wards.

Through an agreement with the Hinds County Election Commission, Jackson voters will use touch-screen machines for the first time. Election results will be posted on the Hinds County Web site. The site will be projected onto a 3-by-5-foot screen in City Hall today.
