Mississippi budgeters expect modest growth in spending

JACKSON – Top Mississippi lawmakers said Monday they expect a 3 percent increase in state spending during the coming year, reflecting a prediction of modest growth in the state economy.

That’s stronger than the 1.1 percent revenue growth rate for the current year over last year, but weaker than the roughly 5.5 percent growth during each of the two previous years.

The 13-member Joint Legislative Budget Committee met Monday and set a revenue estimate of about $6 billion, which is an educated guess about how much money the state will have available to spend. The estimate is used as a basis to write a budget for fiscal 2016, which begins July 1.
