JSU upgrading neighborhood

A wrought-iron fence separating Jackson State from Washington Addition symbolizes its disconnect with some residents. But the university is beginning to reach across the fence to help restore the historic community.

The state’s only urban university is renovating a handful of houses it owns on Barrett Avenue in Washington Addition. It also plans 40 new homes on the street for low- and middle-income families, including JSU physical plant and cafeteria workers, said Roy DeBerry, JSU’s vice president for economic development and local governmental affairs.
