On Saturday the Kentucky Derby will be about the winning horse. Until then the Derby will be about the people who train, ride, own and care for the horses. The horses dazzle us with their remarkable speed, but it is the folks around the horses that give the Derby its flavor.
There will be stories to embrace and stories that make you crinkle your nose, the way the obnoxious Rick Dutrow had noses crinkling after he trained Big Brown to the roses last year.
Stories abound — and they’ll leave you feeling better than Dutrow did.
I’ll leave the magical story of local trainer Tom McCarthy in the hands of Eric Crawford and recommend that you read every word from today’s front page.
