Mississippi lawmakers give mixed reviews to State of the State

Rep. Alyce Clarke, D-Jackson, said she’s concerned that school choice, whether to other conventional public schools or to charter schools, will hurt schools that some students leave. She said she wants legislators to improve all public schools….

…Rep. Becky Currie, R-Brookhaven, said she was cool toward the idea of swapping a gas tax increase for some other tax cut. She said she’d rather consider using money that BP PLC is paying the state to settle economic damages created by the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill….

…Sen. John Horhn, D-Jackson, proposes removing the Confederate battle emblem that has been on the Mississippi state flag since 1894. “I was disappointed that the governor did not address the flag issue one way or the other,” Horhn said.
