Longtime Hinds Co. supervisor concedes

Three decades after he became one of Hinds County’s first black supervisors since Reconstruction, George Smith acknowledged Tuesday that his tenure will soon end.

Smith, the current board president, conceded defeat to longtime rival Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes in the Democratic Party Aug. 2 primary. He will leave office in January.

And Stokes said he will give up the council seat he has held since 1989 for the $45,699.96-a-year post.
