Only in the run-up to Tuesday’s election have we gotten an understanding of how Republican Phil Bryant would wield his Senate power if elected lieutenant governor.

What we have learned from his statements is that he would hang a sign in the Senate saying “Democrats Need Not Apply” for significant Senate committee assignments.

Bryant made that clear in a meeting with the editorial board of Tupelo’s Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal when asked if he would name only Republicans to head key Senate committees.

“Absolutely,” was his answer. A Republican-led Senate “should be led by Republicans,” he emphasized.
