First Candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Announces

JANUARY 6, 2011 – Max Phillips, of Taylorsville announced his candidacy for the Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce at the Mississippi State Capitol on the third day of the 2011 Regular Session. The current commissioner, Dr. Lester Spell, who has served since 1995, previously said he will not seek re-election.

Running as “The Conservative Republican Choice”, Phillips’ history with agriculture in Mississippi goes back to a Masters and a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education from Mississippi State University in 1974 and 1969, respectively. He currently raises cattle and has a long history as an agriculture instructor. Related experience includes assistance in selection and acquisition of breeding stock for youth and adult farmers and training supervisor for agriculture industries.

Married for 11 years to Suzi Thomas Phillips, they enjoy five children and five grandchildren. The Phillips attend Taylorsville Presbyterian Church.
