‘It takes more than hopes and dreams to guide a republic’

LAUREL — Flying thousands of miles, collecting millions in campaign contributions and racking up a terrific carbon footprint, President Obama has been traveling the country to help his party retain its grip on power.

His soaring rhetoric sounds familiar and campaign-ready. When not attempting to shift blame to George W. Bush for the nation’s economic difficulties, he often reaches into his old bag of verbal theatrics.

“Don’t give in to fear,” Obama said last week to a group of disgruntled leftists. “Let’s reach for hope,” he said.

Lofty rhetoric, indeed, but simple words from a smooth-talking president won’t rectify the republic’s economic meltdown.
