ELLISVILLE — Early Americans shared a healthy distrust of centralized authority, believing in the necessity of government, but understanding that it has within it the propensity to abuse its legitimate power for the benefit of those who happen to control it during a given moment in time.
That is one reason why conservatives believe the best government is the one which governs least; and that the most effective, responsible and responsive authority is the one closest to the people.
Government cannot be all things to all people, because it suffers from a weakness: it has no money or capital of its own. Powerless to take any action whatsoever without some form of wealth, it must first confiscate the labor of workers and taxpayers before it can have revenue to spend.
