It was a bold experiment that crossed lots of political boundaries. And, in the end, it was a bold experiment undone by politics.
After years of giving lip service to the idea of Hinds County and Jackson consolidating services and cooperating in significant ways, Mayor Frank Melton made it happen by hiring Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin to also serve as Jackson’s police chief.
It was a surprising and reform-minded step, although it was obvious that reform and good government reorganization was not on Melton’s mind. He hired McMillin to save his political skin at a time when it was becoming apparent that the wheels were coming off at the Jackson Police Department.
