Jackson Mayor Frank Melton’s plan to impound the vehicles of people who haven’t paid past-due fines to the city might not be as easy to accomplish as the mayor made it sound.

First, there are a host of legal obstacles to sort through – due process and potential liability among them.

And second, city police won’t be getting help from the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.

“We’ll still be participating in a joint operation to serve misdemeanor warrants,” Hinds County Capt. Ken Magee said Tuesday. “But as far as going to a person’s home and towing their vehicle? No. We’re not going to do that.”
