A metal-theft law scheduled to take effect today has been halted until a federal judge decides whether it harms scrap-metal dealers.

U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate on Thursday granted a temporary stay of the new law until Wednesday in response to a request for an injunction from Metal Management Mississippi Inc. He said he expects to release a decision on Tuesday.

There were “numerous questions of law” in the challenges to the statute, Wingate wrote.
