Below is a color coded map showing the counties won by the Democratic gubernatorial candidates on Tuesday. Johnny DuPree is in red with Bill Luckett in blue. The yellow is Guy Shaw, who won his home county of Yalobusha.
Overall, DuPree won about 16,000 more votes than Luckett but was certainly well shy of the majority needed. DuPree’s strength was in Hinds county, the biggest prize for Democrats, where he received more than 22,000 votes, or 13,000 more than Luckett. The fact that their may be a high-profile runoff for sheriff there bodes very well for DuPree. DuPree also did well in Madison, which provided him with more votes than any county except for Hinds and Forrest.
