BILL MINOR: Trump’s deeds destroying Republicans

Meantime, the Mississippi governor and his GOP allies who have been running state government have done nothing to get the state ready to function under the inevitable Clinton Administration.

Earlier I described Mississippi as a bastion of “nouveau” Republicanism because two decades ago erstwhile Democrats suddenly began calling themselves Republicans, a long-hated term dating back to the Civil War. Though today’s Republicans are quick to deny it, the party switch is race-based, accompanied by passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which enfranchised thousands of black citizens. Remembering how Franklin D. Roosevelt pulled black people out of residual slavery and that John F. Kennedy sparked a new hope of equal rights, black voters flocked to the Democratic Party.
