Candidates seeking to succeed two DeSoto County-area Republican legislators, former state Sen. Merle Flowers of Olive Branch and former Rep. Tommy Woods of Byhalia, have an Oct. 8 qualifying deadline before the Nov. 6 election, Gov. Phil Bryant said Tuesday.
Bryant issued a Writ of Election setting Nov. 6 as the election date for voters in DeSoto and Marshall counties to elect a successor to Woods, 78, who retired July 30 after 25 years in the State Legislature.
Woods served House District 52, and Flowers represented residents of Senate District 19.
Bryant already had set a Nov. 6 date, national election day for all U.S. House seats and the presidency of the United States, for voters to pick a successor to Flowers.
