Mississippi elections soon will be overhauled, giving the next secretary of state unprecedented influence.

Seven candidates – three Democrats and four Republicans – are on the ballot in the Aug. 7 primary. Each party winner gets to compete for secretary of state on Nov. 6.

The top elections officer will offer recommendations on voter ID and requiring 1.7 million Mississippians to reregister.
