If Jackson City Council members turn down Mayor Frank Melton’s request for $1.2 million to fund his youth summer jobs program, they will have to do it in front of the young people and their parents.

Nearly 900 young people showed up Saturday at Greater Tree of Life Baptist Church to express their interest in the program.

On Monday, Melton had more than a dozen volunteers manning phones at City Hall arranging for a massive paperwork processing session that just happens to coincide with the start of today’s council meeting.

Melton said he believes he has at least three council votes. Four votes are needed to approve the program.
