The two top vote-getters in the June 2 First Congressional District runoff are virtual strangers to the top northwest county in Mississippi.
That could change as the June 2 runoff looms, just a little more than two weeks away.
Of all the 13 candidates in the race, Trent Kelly and Walter Zinn are perhaps the least known in DeSoto County and spent the least in the local media market.
Kelly’s strategy of playing to his Tupelo and northeast Mississippi base apparently paid off with his strong showing districtwide.
A U.S. combat veteran and district attorney, Kelly finished second behind Walter Howard Zinn.
Zinn is a former clerk for former U.S. Rep. and now U.S. Senator Roger Wicker and other political leaders, both Democrat and Republican, in the officially nonpartisan Congressional race.
