Speaker of the House Philip Gunn and members of the Mississippi House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed House Bill 955, commonly known as the “Third Grade Reading Gate” bill, by a vote of 94-19.

“No other measure that we pass this year will have a greater impact on our educational system than this bill,” said Speaker Gunn. “The aim of this bill is to require children to be able to read on a third grade reading level before being promoted to the fourth grade.

“This bill will have a more sweeping and immediate impact than any other education reform we pass this year,” continued the Speaker. “I commend the House, both Democrats and Republicans, for having the vision to pass this bill.”
