Democratic House Speaker Billy McCoy (D-Rienzi) is using taxpayer dollars to send one of his top lieutenants on a political trip to the Democratic National Convention for “educational” purposes. However, the real purpose of State Rep. Tyrone Ellis’s (D-Starkville) taxpayer funded vacation is to walk the red carpet at Sen. Barack Obama’s coronation in Denver.

“The Mississippi House of Representatives is not a private travel agency. Just because Billy McCoy has been taking taxpayers for a ride, doesn’t mean we also have to pay for his trips,” said Brad White, incoming Chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party. “Tyrone Ellis is welcome to go party with Obama if he wants, but he should do it on his own dime. This is a blatant betrayal of the public’s trust.”

When offered by McCoy, Republican leader Mark Baker (R-Brandon) refused to allow taxpayers to pay for his trip to the Republican National Convention. “Never in my wildest dreams would I consider asking for taxpayer money to pay for a political trip,” Rep. Baker said.

“The ineptitude of top Democrats in this state leaves me speechless,” White added. “But you won’t see Jamie Franks and Barbara Blackmon holding a press conference to express outrage over this. They claim to be for the working man, but are only interested in using our money to pay for their political junkets.”
