Mental Health faces large turnover

The turnover rate for the 2,900 direct care workers employed by the Department of Mental Health was 48 percent for fiscal year 2015, legislators were told Wednesday.

In addition, it costs between $2,300 and $2,600 to train new direct care workers.

Wendy Bailey, a spokeswoman for the Department of Mental Health, said it is not uncommon for the agency to lose direct care workers to other jobs such as fast food restaurants.
