Must choice be governance ‘or’ glitter for mayor – not both?

I think that is the question voters face in the Jackson mayoral election between incumbent Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and challenger Frank Melton.

Melton is full of style; Johnson full of substance.

After eight years in office, voters should know that Johnson is not a flashy politician. He is a planner and a plodder. He is arguably the most qualified and educated mayor the city has had when it comes to public policy.

Give him a problem, he will cite a list of pluses and minuses and give you a plan. It won’t be flashy and it won’t be fast, but it will be imminently competent.

Jackson voters also know Frank Melton. The former CEO of WLBT-Channel 3, Melton for years inspired and entertained viewers with his television commentary “The Bottom Line.”

He is no-nonsense, direct and talks tough. Give him a problem and he will tell you exactly what he is going to do and when, which is now. He is personable and exudes the characteristics of a tough CEO who gets things done.
